Subject: Dismissal as a Forum Moderator & Community Liaison (online facsimile)

 Dear Warren,

A recent change in policy requires that Administrative access to official forums will be limited to Corporate Officers of the Utah Filmmakers Association. It was partially for this reason that your access was changed from that of an Admin to a Moderator. However, in light of recent events, your voluntary services as a Moderator in the Utah Filmmakers Facebook group and as a UFA Community Liaisonwhich have been exceptional and greatly appreciated—are no longer expected of you. Therefore, your access to Moderator tools—including the UFA (Group Admins/Moderators) forum—has been rescinded, as have your digital credentials.

This difficult decision was made under the advisement of legal counsel. I sincerely wanted to keep you on as a moderator and eventually expand your role. This included the possibility of restoring your Administrative access within the group—which would mean inviting you to become a UFA Corporate Officer. Unfortunately, your violation of the terms of our recent meeting—specifically those identifying the individuals who were authorized to be in attendance—is only the most recent example of your disregard for the Utah Filmmakers Code of Ethics & Conduct. For UFA Community Members, the Ethics Code is a standard to strive for. As a group Moderator and Community Liaison, you represented the organization, which carries with it an expectation to exemplify that Code.

Recent Actions by Workman Pro, LLC, were not just in contravention of our Ethics Code but of established legal statutes directly impacting the Utah Filmmakers Association—an appropriate response to which is still under consideration.

Regardless of how you define your responsibilities—or lack thereof—in the operations of Workman Pro, LLC, according to its public registration, you are listed by name as one of two equal Managers and are, therefore, equally responsible for any actions taken in its name. Your claims of having no knowledge of any actions until after the fact have been made abundantly clear, but your subsequent complicity and justification for those same actions are equally clear.

Despite recent events, you’re still a member of the Utah Filmmakers Association and its official Facebook forum, with no restrictions and the same rights & responsibilities as other members. You’re welcome to continue utilizing the group as a resource as you always have—the highlights of your past participation in the group don’t even require being a moderator—and we look forward to seeing your continued participation as a UFA Community Member as well as that of the Utah Film Festival and its organizers. As I stated in the agenda of our previous meeting, the Utah Film Festival is a landmark event that motivates and inspires the local film community. We want to see you continue actively engaging our group Members with your entertaining and interactive posts, assessing the needs of local filmmakers in open discussions, and continuing to promote the Utah Film Festival and its recurring community events.

Contrary to some of your remarks on Monday—which I found surprising at the time—the Utah Filmmakers Facebook group is not an exclusive “club” it’s a forum for an inclusive community that draws strength from the diversity of its members. As the group rules are informed by the organization’s Ethics Code, which exists as a standard to strive for, most members are given a great deal of leeway when it comes to violations of group rules. Encouraging members to raise their standards is preferable to excluding them. Even those who refuse to change serve as an example to others of how not to engage with professionals—and, sometimes, reveal who not to engage with at all.

Thank you for everything you have done—and continue to do—for our community. It is sincerely hoped that being free of the aforementioned obligations will enable you to continue to grow and improve your other endeavors professionally and ethically for the benefit of you and your family and the local film community.

Sincerely,

(signed)
